How do I know if a boudoir photographer's style is right for me?
Start with the portfolio. A reputable boudoir photographer should have a secure website with an extensive portfolio that showcases their style and the types of photos they take. Do they showcase moody or brighter images? Both? What you see is what you get, so look over everything to make sure they can deliver what you want. Pay attention to the lighting, poses, and composition, and make sure they align with your own vision for your session. Many photographers don't have a grasp on these foundational skills, and that can be devastating to realize when it's too late.
It's also necessary to make sure your photographer can capture exactly what you're looking for. If you want spicier images, make sure your photographer is comfortable offering them. Looking for fine art nudes or bodyscapes? Ask to view that work ahead of time to make sure it's tasteful, artistic, and meets your standards.
What should I look for in boudoir photographer reviews?
Read their reviews! Check out online reviews of boudoir photographers in the San Francisco Bay Area, and look beyond those who have sponsored ads. This is such an important and intimate session, so take your time finding a few photographers who stand out to you. Look for positive reviews, and read what people say about their experience. Were clients able to go into detail about how the photographer helped them feel confident with their posing? Did they say the session changed their perception of their body or their outlook on life? Reviews can give you a good sense of what to expect and whether a photographer might be a good fit.
Why does a pre-session consultation matter?
Before you book, have a pre-consultation call or Zoom with your photographer. It's a great chance to get to know them, ask questions, and talk through your vision. It's also how you find out if you click. Is your photographer excited to be part of your boudoir journey? Can you tell they'll be an amazing hype person at your session? Do you feel a good connection, and can you put your trust in them for such a raw and vulnerable type of photoshoot? If you can answer yes to all of these, they sound like a good fit. If not, keep looking and you will find the right one!
Does my photographer need boudoir-specific experience?
Yes, and it's SO important. Just like you wouldn't expect a pastry chef to make you the best sushi rolls in the world, you wouldn't expect a wedding or newborn photographer to create the most amazing boudoir images for you. Are there photographers who "do it all"? Yes, and that's okay, but look for someone with experience specifically in boudoir. It's a specialized type of photography that takes a certain level of skill. In boudoir, angles are everything! They can make or break an image. Composition and lighting matter just as much, and they create different vibes and make your photos stand out.
The tiniest details matter, too. With my own clients, I'm very nitpicky about all the little things. Yes, I will fix every strap so it isn't twisted. I will gently move those annoying stray hairs from your face or neckline so they don't take away from your images. I will position your hands so your photos don't look funky. All of these things done well add up to beautiful images!
What education or credentials should I ask about?
Don't be afraid to ask your photographer if they've received education specifically to enhance their boudoir photography. Great photographers are constantly learning so they can provide better imagery, service, and experiences for their clients. Check whether they've been published for their art or had gallery shows displaying their work. The more experienced your photographer is, the easier it is to trust them to provide everything you're looking for and deserve.
